The Milan Designweek is long gone, but the inspiration isn’t! I think I can blog all summer long about all inspiring designs, colors, fabrics, items and concepts I saw in Milan. And I will! So please keep following me and my blog by mail| Facebook | twitter | bloglovin | Instagram . If you didn’t get the chance to go to Milan yourself, you can still see the highlights I spotted there. I hope you enjoy it!

At the Lambrate area, where the more conceptual designs and the design academies work is shown, rENs showcased their products. rENS is a research-based design duo from Eindhoven in The Netherlands, by Renee Mennen and Stefanie van Keijsteren . rENs followed their own heart when they took off with the study “red”. They explored the meanings and applications of one specific color.

I saw this study and items they made several times, like here during Elle Inside Design Amsterdam and at the DDW a few years ago. I was very intrigued by this concept. I’m a color specialist and do some research myself. It never came up to me that this study could be a concept on itself. I love rENs for doing just that. Since I was young I always collected colors in forms of samples, textiles, little papers and things with color. And I also did small color test which intrigued me. Just like the “True Colours” project of rENs you can read more about, below in this blogpost.

But first : “Reddish”

This series of table objects is made in cooperation with Cor Unum. Reddish is a remarkable way of coloring exclusive ceramics. By placing a ceramic object in a liquid pigment, the object paints itself. “The porosity of the material and the duration of the dye decide on the outcome. The colorant soaks into the material, draws a pattern and leaves traces. The process remains active for months.”
It creates objects that are unique and special. One of these designs, the “Reddish Ceramic Plate Wide” is now available for a short period at Crowdy House. Crowdy House is a platform with a mission: “To democratize the design industry through helping currently 750+ designers and makers sell directly to design fans all over the world. “Crowdy House builds the technology and provides the service that allows designers to make a better profit, develop new designs and fill the world with a wider variety of great design.

“Fade to Stay”
This study by rENs is about color and light. As colors are not paint, but a reflection of light, this project is very interesting to me. As an interior designer it’s very useful to understand how color works and I studied this subject myself when I was a student at Artemis in Amsterdam. rENs is supported by Canon and Philips on this project. Colors are constantly changing depending on the light, and time you see them. “To visualize these dynamics, layered primary colours were printed and, using a hi-end simulator, exposed to a variable amount of sunlight.” as rENs explains. Unexpected shades and combinations are created. The first results of the research into the aesthetics of fading is a set of 5 posters, each with a different exposure time.

“True Colours”

Another project of rENS is “True Colours”. In this project, rENs cracks the ink’s code of black by applying marker ink on water-drenched textiles. That reveals the individual tints separately. I’m not sure if you knew this already, but black is always the darkest shade of one or more colors. By “decompose” of a color, in this casethe black marker, you will see the actual colors, from which the color actually exists. his process is called chromatography. The patterns that appear in this test are never the same. This irregularity forms the basis of a collection of fabrics.

Milan Design week 2015 Lambrate
Crowdy House

“Fade to Stay”

Geniet!
