I’m having fun with Eames Plastic Chairs! There are a lot of options to choose from, but seeing them all together at the Vitra Eames plastic chair Pop-Up store in Amsterdam really made me smile! What a great way to personalize your home or office with these chairs.
Did you know that the Plastic Chair was designed by Ray and Charles Eames for a design contest for the Museum of Modern Art in New York back in 1948? It was the first industrial produced plastic chair. The shell was originally made out of fiberglass, and now from polypropylene in lots of colors.
“Getting the most of the best to the greatest number of people for the least’: with these words, Charles and Ray Eames described one of their main goals as furniture designers. None of their other designs come as close to achieving this ideal as the Plastic Chairs. For years, the designer couple explored the fundamental idea of a one-piece seat shell moulded to fit the contours of the human body. After experiments with plywood and sheet aluminium in the 1940s produce unsatisfactory results, their search for alternative materials led them to glass-fiber reinforced polyester resin.”
This chair has become a real design icon. Of course, the white version with the “Eiffel tower” base is the most seen one and is like a little black dress amongst the chairs. But how much fun is it to choose the colors, upholstery, shell and the base in a unique combination, so that it fits your personal style and interior or [home-] office?
At the Vitra Pop-up store in Amsterdam, you can actually create your own chair yourself. You have a wide variety to choose from: The family of the Eames Plastic Chair consists shells with or without armrests and a rocking chair base with a seat shell with armrests. Depending on the model, the bases are available in various finishes and wood types.
The organic seat shell is available in 14 different colors. You can choose from different types of coverings, with a seat cushion or fully lined with different fabric colors. Altogether there are more than 100,000 possible configurations!

Genieten met Eames Plastic Chairs! Ik weet dat er veel opties zijn om uit te kiezen, maar toen ik ze allemaal samen zag in de Vitra Eames Plastic Chair Pop-Up Store in Amsterdam verscheen er een grote glimlach op mijn gezicht. Wat een fijne manier om je huis of kantoor te personaliseren met deze stoelen.
Wist je dat de Plastic Chair ontworpen werd door Ray en Charles Eames voor een ontwerpwedstrijd voor het Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1948? Het was de eerste industrieel geproduceerde kunststof stoel. De schaal was oorspronkelijk gemaakt van glasvezel en nu van polypropyleen in heel veel kleuren.
“Een zo groot mogelijk publiek voor zo min mogelijk van zo veel mogelijk van het beste laten profiteren”. Zo omschreven Charles en Ray Eames zelf een van hun voornaamste doelen als meubelontwerpers. Geen van hun andere ontwerpen kwam zo dicht in de buurt van dit ideaal als de Plastic Chairs. Jarenlang diepte het ontwerperskoppel het basisidee van een naar het menselijk lichaam gevormde eendelige zitschaal uit. Nadat experimenten met multiplex en aluminiumplaat onbevredigende resultaten hadden opgeleverd, kwamen ze in hun zoektocht naar andere materialen uiteindelijk bij glasvezelversterkte kunststof uit.”
Deze stoel is een echt designicoon geworden. Natuurlijk is de witte versie met de “Eiffeltoren” onderstel de meest gekozen versie en de little black dress onder de stoelen. Maar hoe leuk is het om de kleuren, bekleding, kuipje en het onderstel in een unieke combinatie te kiezen, zodat het past bij jouw persoonlijke stijl en interieur of bijvoorbeeld je werkplek in huis?
In de Vitra Pop-Up store in Amsterdam kun je zelf je eigen stoel creëren. Je hebt een grote verscheidenheid om uit te kiezen: De Eames Plastic Chair familie bestaat uit kuipjes met of zonder armleuningen en een schommelstoelonderstel versie met zitschaal met armleuningen.
Afhankelijk van het model zijn de onderstellen beschikbaar in verschillende afwerkingen en houtsoorten. De organische kuipjes zijn verkrijgbaar in 14 verschillende kleuren. U kunt kiezen uit diverse soorten stoffering, een zitkussen of volledig gestoffeerd, ook weer in verschillende stofkleuren. In totaal zijn er meer dan 100.000 mogelijke configuraties!
