If you follow me on Instagram, you probably have noticed I’m at the Dutch Design Week, for my yearly doses of Design and Trend input. The Dutch Design Week, also known as DDW, is such a unique event.
I think you can compare it best with the outside events of the Milan design week, like Ventura Lambrate. Lot’s of young, new designers, but also students and innovative brands are represented. There is so much to see, that you easily can stay the whole week and even then you probably missed some spots.
For me this year a few things were most outstanding: Lot’s of color and material research! One of the biggest examples of this is the exhibition ” Everything but the product” by Envisions, a group of last years graduated students of the Eindhoven Design Academy, who showcased their products and designs for the first time in Milan last April.
Below a selection of my finds until now. If you have the chance to go visit the Dutch Design Week for yourself: please do! You don’t want to miss this. Besides the uniqueness of this yearly event, with a never-ending input of design, you probably will be surprised by the warm and welcome feeling of the overall event, with all the designers who are willing to talk to you in person and explain their visions and concepts. But also the nice spots to eat and drink and relax are amazing.

Dutch Design Week 2016
Als je me volgt op Instagram, heb je waarschijnlijk al gemerkt dat ik deze week bij de Nederlandse Design Week ben, voor mijn jaarlijkse doses Design en Trend inspiratie. De Dutch Design Week, ook wel bekend als DDW, is zo’n uniek evenement.
Ik denk dat je het het best kunt vergelijken met Ventura Lambrate in Milaan tijdens de Designweek. Veel jonge, nieuwe ontwerpers maar ook studenten en innovatieve merken zijn vertegenwoordigd. Er is zoveel te zien, dat je makkelijk de hele week kunt blijven en zelfs dan waarschijnlijk nog niet alles hebt gezien.
Voor mij is dit jaar het meest opvallend: Heel veel kleur en materiaal onderzoek! Een van de grootste voorbeelden hiervan is de tentoonstelling “Alles behalve het product” van Envisions , een groep vorig jaar afgestudeerde studenten van de Design Academy Eindhoven, die hun producten en ontwerpen voor het eerst in Milaan hebben tentoongesteld, afgelopen april.
Hieronder vind je een selectie van mijn vondsten tot nu toe. Als je de kans hebt om zelf de DDW te gaan bezoeken: doen! Je wilt dit niet missen. Naast het unieke karakter van dit jaarlijks evenement, met een enrome hoeveelheid design, zul je waarschijnlijk verrast zijn door het warme en gastvrije gevoel van het totale evenement, waar alle ontwerpers bereid zijn om je persoonlijk te woord te staan en hun visies en concepten uit te leggen. Maar ook al die leuke plekjes om wat te eten en te drinken en te ontspannen zijn fantastisch.

Kristina Dam Studio has a mission: making art and merge this with interior as in furniture, art prints, illustrations and images. The materials used are fair and carefully picked, such as brass, marble, mirror, oak, steel and glass.
The objects from the collection consist of natural colors. Each object has thorough designed details, but also simplicity. This makes the item serene, but an eye-catcher.
Kristina Dam is a graduate of the Royal Danish School of Fine and Performing Arts, Architecture and Design. In her designs, you will find her great love for architecture and minimalist, graphic lines. Her first product – a number of limited edition artwork – quickly became a favorite in Scandinavian design shops, magazines and houses. Today Kristina Dam Studio creates two collections a year and she works together with talented and established designers.
In her new collection, she has a great bench and book-keeper designed, these items express very well where Kristina stands for.
The Vertical Bench is the smaller version of the previously produced “daybed”. This beautiful small version is made of natural oak and soft brown leather. Hand-made connections in the wood show the quality of this beautiful piece of furniture. A nice piece of timber-framed mastership, pure and beautiful. Simple with an edge!
The Bookkeeper is made of steel, available in black and white. A wonderful product for your beautiful book collection. The minimalist design combined with the sturdy steel, without losing it’s functionality, makes this piece a must-have!

In haar nieuwe collectie heeft ze een o.a. een prachtig bankje en boekenstandaard ontworpen, deze items laat goed zien waar Kristina voor staat.
De Vertical Bench is de kleinere versie van de reeds eerder geproduceerde daybed. Deze mooie kleine versie is gemaakt van naturel eiken en zacht bruin leer. De handgemaakte verbindingen in het hout laten de kwaliteit van dit prachtige meubel zien. Een prachtig stukje vakwerk dat doordacht, zuiver en mooi is. Simpel mét een randje!
De boekenstandaard Bookkeeper is gemaakt van staal, verkrijgbaar in zwart en wit. Een mooi en grafisch product om je verzameling boeken te presenteren. Door het minimalistische design in combinatie met het stoere staal, zonder de functionaliteit te verliezen, is dit voor mij een aanrader.

Who wouldn’t want to wake up in this hotel room? It’s one of the rooms of the new Hotel Blue in Nijmegen NL. In my blogpost about the Blue lounge, restaurant and bar, you can read all about my stay. Since there was so much to show, I’ve made this second post.
I love the moody colors used on the walls and ceilings. It gives the room a cosy look and is a bit masculine at the same time. The added yellow touch of the small table is just perfect. The rooms all have these wonderful high ceilings.
The bed was very comfortable and made with crispy white sheets. I love the big leather pillow: I want to steal that idea for my own bed at home.
We were lucky with a nice balcony. I love to open the doors and sit outside for a bit. If possible, ask for this when you book the room. Not all rooms have one. A small but comfortable sitting nook in black is just enough to drink your first made coffee in the morning, or write your postcards for home.
The comfortable shower and beautiful sink, designed by Jee-O, make the room complete. Hotel Blue provides a goody bag with coffee, tea and the nicest shower gel and shampoo.
Wie zou er nou niet wakker willen worden in deze hotel kamer? Het is een van de kamers van het nieuwe Hotel Blue in Nijmegen. In mijn eerdere blogpost over de Blue lounge, het restaurant en de bar, kunt je alles over mijn verblijf. Er was zo veel mooist om te laten zien, heb ik er twee posts van heb gemaakt.
In de kamers zijn ale wanden, inclusief het palfond geschilders in een donkere tint, een “moody color” zoals ze dat noemen. Het geeft de kamer een gezellige uitstraling en is stoer tegelijk. Het toefje geel in de vorm van het bijzettafeltje annex nachtkastje de kleine tafel isperfect. De kamers hebben allemaal prachtige hoge plafonds.
Het bed was zeer comfortabel en opgmaakt met heerlijk knisperend verse witte lakens. Prachtig, dat grote leder kussen aan het hoofdeind: Ik wil dat idee stelen voor op mijn eigen bed thuis.
We hadden geluk met een mooi prive balkon aan de kamer. Heerlijk om de deuren te openen en even buiten te kunnen zitten. Tip: vraag naar ene kamer met balkon, wanneer je een kamer boekt. Niet alle kamers hebben er één Het is niet altijd mogelijk, maar wel heel fijn!
Een kleine, maar comfortabele zithoekje in het zwart, is net genoeg om je eerste zelf gemaakte koffie te drinken in de ochtend, of je schrijf er een kaartje naar huis.
De comfortabele douche en mooie wastafel, ontworpen door Jee-O , maken de kamer compleet. Hotel Blue verschaft je bij aankomst een goody bag met fijne koffie, thee en de heerlijke douchegel en shampoo.
Is it really as good as I hope it is? My expectations were so high, that I was a bit worried it could only be disappointing. But no! It was even better than I imagined.
For years, a visit to the Vitra Campus was on my wishlist. I even drove past Basel several times on my way to Italy. But until now, I never got the chance to stop by.
I can only say: please don’t wait as long as I did! Vitra Campus is a real design and architecture heaven. Especially now, with the new ” Shaudepot” designed by Basel- based architects Herzog & de Meuron who also designed the well-known VitraHaus.
At the Vitra Campus you find lots of design furniture, a museum, many exhibitions and beautiful architecture by renowned architects like Frank Ghery, Zaha Hadid, Alvaro Siza, Tadao Ando and many more. For more information and the agenda, I refer to the Vitra Campus Website.
So, I was thrilled to be invited for the opening of the Shaudepot and love to share it here with you.
Vitra has a huge collection of design items, consisting 7000 pieces of furniture and more than 1000 lighting objects, which show a long line of design and furniture history from Europe, the USA and all over the world. Designers like Charles and Ray Eames, Verner Panton, Alexander Girard and many others are presented.
All these years the design furniture and lighting fixture items did not have an actual spot where the collection could be shown to the public because the original Vitra design museum building was more and more used for the temporary collections. And these sometimes very delicate, old and new original pieces need special conditions to preserve them for the future. The original depot, where the items were kept was in a basement and not accessible for the public.
Now, with this new building “Shaudepot”, build on top of the original depot basement ,it’s there for you and me and every design lover, to explore. As said, a huge collection of historical and new key design objects is showcased in a big open space with high shelving units. In the basement, there is even more. There you’ll find a big chest of drawers, with materials, construction- and educational material.
My personal favorite was hard to find because I kept switching from one to the other. At the end, I came to the conclusion that I love many many of them. Some for the design, others for the materials or used techniques, or just for it’s history. But I really felt a bit proud to find so many Dutch Designs amongst the youngest pieces.
About the building itself: I loved it. I heard some people say that the didn’t find it that spectacular or inspiring. But to me, it refers to the original African huts, made out of clay, that protects the inside from to much sun and light.
For me it all made sense: it felt like the earth, presented by the red clay bricks, is protecting something very beautiful inside. Of course translated into a modern, very down to earth and minimal building. Besides that, I loved the beautiful texture of the facade, made out of bricks broken in half and put inside out, creating this great but minimal look.
After the tour, you can sit down in the new cafe the “Depot Deli” or do some shopping in the foyer at the “Shaudepot Shop” where you can find beautiful design items, presents and books.
Please make sure to stop by on your way to your holiday destination or on your way back! Or plan a special trip to this very inspiring design heaven. You don’t want to miss this. Is het echt zo goed als ik hoop dat het is? Mijn verwachtingen waren zo hoog, dat ik een beetje bang was dat het alleen maar tegen kon vallen. Maar nee! Het was zelfs mooier dan ik had gedacht.
Al jaren stond een bezoek aan de Vitra Campus hoog op mijn verlanglijstje. Ik ben zelfs diverse keren langs Basel gekomen op weg naar Italië. Maar tot nu toe haf ik nooit de kans om er ook te stoppen.
Ik kan alleen maar zeggen: wacht alsjeblieft niet zo lang als ik! De Vitra Campus is een echte design en architectuur hemel op aarde. Zeker nu, met het nieuwe “Shaudepot”, ontworpen door de uit Basel afkomstig architecten Herzog & de Meuron, die ook het bekende VitraHaus ontwierpen.

Dus, ik was super blij dat ik werd uitgenodigd voor de opening van het Shaudepot en wil het hier op mijn blog graag met jullie delen.

Ontwerpers zoals Charles en Ray Eames, Verner Panton, Alexander Girard en vele anderen worden hier zij aan zij gepresenteerd.
Al die jaren beschikten deze waardevolle items niet over een eigen plek waar de collectie aan het publiek kon worden getoond. Dit omdat het oorspronkelijke Vitra Design Museum meer en meer gebruikt werd voor tijdelijke collecties. En deze, soms zeer delicate, oude en nieuwe originele stukken verdienden een speciale behandeling en opslag zodat ze ook in de toekomst nog te zien en te bewonderen zijn. Het originele depot, waar de items werden bewaard, was in een kelder en niet toegankelijk voor het publiek.
Nu, met dit nieuwe gebouw “Shaudepot” dat boven op de originele depot-kelder is gebouwd, het is de collectie voor jou en mij en elke design liefhebber toegankelijk om te verkennen. Zoals gezegd, er is een enorme collectie van historische en nieuwe spraakmakende design objecten tentoongesteld, in een grote open ruimte met hoge rekken. In het originele depot in de kelder is zelfs nog meer. Ook vind je daar grote lade kasten met diverse materialen, bouw- en educatief materiaal.
Mijn persoonlijke favoriet was moeilijk te vinden. Ik maar bleef wisselen van het ene naar het andere object. Tot ik tot de conclusie kwam dat ik geen echte faviriet heb: ik hou van heel veel van de ontwerpen. Sommigen om de vormgeving, anderen voor de materialen of gebruikte techniek, of gewoon vanwege de geschiedenis. Maar ik voelde me wel echt een beetje trots op zoveel Nederlands design tussen de jongste stukken van de colectie.
Over het gebouw zelf: ik vond het geweldig. Ik gehoorde sommige mensen zeggen dat ze het niet zo spectaculair of inspirerend vonden. Maar voor mij verwijst het gebouw naar de oorspronkelijke Afrikaanse hutjes, gemaakt van klei, die de binnenkant beschermen tegen te veel zon en licht.
Voor mij klopte het allemaal: het voelde alsof de aarde, gepresenteerd in de rode bakstenen, iets heel mooi s aan de binnenkant beschermt. Natuurlijk vertaald in een moder, zeer “down to earth” en minimalistisch gebouw. Daarnaast viel ik voor het mooie textuur op de gevel, gemaakt van in tweeën gebroken baksteen met de binnen kant naar buiten geplaatst, waardoor het een prachtige minimalistiche look creeerde.
Na het ronde museum kun je lekker wat eten of drinken in het nieuwe cafe de “Depot Deli” of gaan winkelen in de foyer bij de “Shaudepot Shop” waar je prachtige design accessires, grotere items, cadeautjes en boeken kunnen vinden.
Tip: Zorg ervoor om echt even te stoppen bij de Vitra Campus, op weg naar, of terug van je vakantiebestemming! Of plan een speciaal reisje naar dit zeer inspirerende ” Design Heaven”. Je wilt het niet missen. En buiten het nieuwe Shaudepot is er nog veel meer te zien op de Vitra Campus: kijkje op de Vitra Design Museum site voor meer informatie.
